In an era when any teen with a laptop can record a few loops and some atmospherics, throw them up on a Myspace profile and call himself a musician, Tony Young is a reminder of why 99% will never sell a single record. Firstly, the market for this kind of sound is tiny but there are a glut of "artists" producing it--most of it utter rubbish. Secondly, it actually takes incredible skill to compose minimalist works of a high quality.
Those two forces combine to make it exceedingly difficult to separate the wheat from a disproportionately large field of chaff. Thankfully, Chicago-based Tympanik Audio has taken on the task and managed to discover Autoclav1.1, a spectacular project from Young that gets right everything that so many amateurs do wrong.
The result is a richly-layered emotional symphony that still manages to project a very clean, simple aesthetic. Young pulls influences from IDM, dark ambient, post-punk and rock into a single coherent narrative in each album. Lyrics are sparse, as the real vocalist on most songs is the piano. Backing up the keyboards are occasional guitar tracks, which are sometimes provided by guests like Dave Pybus from Cradle of Filth.
Imagine what would happen if Trent Reznor and Philip Glass had a lovechild in the recording studio, delivered by Robert Miles. That baby might someday blossom into an artist with the same potential as Autoclav1.1.
Rather than listing favorites, I recommend that albums be consumed whole. The first that I would advise you to start with is 2008's Love No Longer Lives Here.
