Hailing from Australia, industrial cyberpunk duo Angelspit are doing their best to turn the darktronica scene upside down and stir up a revolution. A polarizing force known for their visual extravagance, Angelspit is either praised by critics for their artistic vision and integration of the aural and visual experiences, or derided as "just another image band" whose flashy appearance is designed to get attention, cheapening the music.
This listener is in the former camp, as even with the imagery and costuming aside, Angelspit cranks out some great tunes. Their most recent release, Blood Death Ivory, boasts a lot of floorkillers with a refreshing style. An apt description might be "robotic dance metal;" vocals are delivered in an emphatic, monotone cadence, accompanied by a dense wave of fuzz, modular synths, guitar-like melodies, and miscellaneous beeps and bloops. It's worth noting that Blood Death Ivory's metal influences are a new direction for ZooG and DestroyX, after their initial releases which were more punk-inspired.
True to the industrial aesthetic created by pioneers like Einstürzende Neubauten, Angelspit also incorporates original effects created by mechanical objects and found sounds, such as those made in the process of destroying a bike rack. Their origins in the punk ethos also carry on in their strong support of the Australian counterculture music scene; ZooG and DestroyX got their start publishing punk zines and running websites like AustralianGothic.com (now the CrashFrequency artists' collective). They also continue to post short how-to videos and behind-the-scenes looks at how their music gets produced. It is clear through their heavy involvement in aspects of the community beyond their own music that their costuming and imagery is more than a cheap trick.
Darktronica favorites--"Grind," "Paint Hell Red," and "Jugular"--all come from the metal-tinged Blood Death Ivory.
