One of the more unique musical projects out there, E Nomine is a band that most listeners will either love or be terribly bored by. Their formula is straightforward but inventive: mix atmospheric trance and techno beats with spoken word passages and Gregorian chants. Sprinkle a dash of choral singing on top, and bake to perfection.
E Nomine's background music is frequently generic, but the composition is at a high quality, the band's use of well-known German voice actors results in a convincing, emotional delivery of the spoken word passages, and the chanting complements the prose perfectly. Lyrical themes are of a religious nature and frequently deal with the darker side of spirituality, apocalyptic events, and evil creatures. Lyrics are almost entirely in German, however, with smatterings of Latin and Italian, so the meanings of E Nomine's poetic compositions are largely lost on their English-speaking audiences.
All of E Nomine's albums are fairly similar musically and consist of alternating interludes and songs, so if you find that you enjoy their formula, you'll be well-served by their entire catalogue. For those who understand German, the difference in their albums is the lyrical themes, with Finsternis being by far their darkest album, dealing with the underworld, werewolves, vampires, evil spirits and witches, and more. Das Testament is their most uplifting, as it recounts all of the major chronicles of the Bible. Die Prophezeiung falls somewhere between the two, still dealing with spiritual themes but from more pagan and shamanistic points of view.
Darktronica favorites are "Wolfen (Das Tier In Mir)," "Deine Welt," "Mitternacht," and "Hexenjagd."
