Tristania
Genre: Gothic Metal
Origin: Norway
Status: Active
Along with pioneers Theatre of Tragedy and Lacrimas Profundere, Tristania is one of the archetypes of gothic metal, and a group that sets a standard few have been able to attain since. The "beauty and the beast" style of operatic female vocals blended with growling death metal male vocals has become extremely popular in recent years, but Tristania took this approach even further, also incorporating a clean male tenor and choral chanting.
Classical instruments such as flute, violin and cello add further to the adventurous complexity of Tristania's trademark sound, which peaked early in Beyond The Veil, one of the most lush and full gothic metal albums ever produced. Driving force Morten Veland left the group shortly after Veil's release to start his own band, Sirenia, but Tristania's next release World Of Glass suffered little in the transition. Although they still maintain the high quality Tristania is known for, successive albums have become a bit simpler and more accessible to the mainstream listener.
Darktronica favorites are "Opus Relinque," "The Shining Path," "Selling Out," and "My Lost Lenore."
