Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson

Genre: Industrial Rock
Origin: USA
Status: Active

One of the few pop phenomena among the ranks of dark electronic bands, Marilyn Manson has always been one of music's more controversial figures. Banned from performing in many metropolitan venues and scapegoated by the media after the 1999 school shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado, Marilyn Manson has nonetheless turned the publicity to their advantage, producing three platinum albums, two of which topped the Billboard charts on their release.

Musically, Manson is an interesting blend of glam metal, industrial and straightforward hard rock. Creative mastermind Brian Warner has always viewed Marilyn Manson's music as part of a larger artistic project, which has resulted in several concept albums, elaborate theatrical concert staging, and a panoply of media stunts and side projects. Even the names of band members have significance: Warner's stage name is the ironic mashup of Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, and other members take a similar tack, drawing from the juxtaposition of a famous glamour icon and a serial killer.

After 2007's Eat Me, Drink Me tour, Manson's musical career has been put on hold to concentrate on other artistic pursuits, including several exhibitions of his watercolor paintings and his directing debut, Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll.

Darktronica favorites are "Tourniquet," "Coma White," "Astonishing Panorama Of The End Times," and "Mechanical Animals."
