In 1999, after suffering creative differences regarding the future of the band, KMFDM disbanded temporarily. Sascha Konietzko and Tim Skold reformed along with singer Lucia Cifarelli as MDFMK. En Esch and Günter Schulz, the other members of KMFDM at the time, started their own side project, Slick Idiot.
Shortly after releasing the first and only MDFMK album, Sascha reassumed the original KMFDM mantle. Esch and Schulz were invited to rejoin but declined. Cifarelli has remained involved with KMFDM ever since and married Konietko in 2005.
