Anathema, along with fellow British rockers Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, helped develop and popularize the doomdeath style of metal in the early 1990's. In later years they have mellowed a bit, evolving into more of an atmospheric rock group in the same vein as Tiamat; imagine injecting a large dose of Pink Floyd into doom metal.
Anathema has toured with bands as diverse as Bolt Thrower and Cradle Of Filth in their early years, to Cathedral and Paradise Lost in their heavy doom period, to Porcupine Tree and HIM in recent years. Interestingly, several of their lineup changes have involved swapping members with groups that the band has toured with.
Across all of their albums, the Cavanagh brothers and crew have proven that they are capable of producing beautiful music in a range of styles, and they've weathered their evolution well, acquiring a steadily growing fanbase and seamlessly integrating more progressive electronics and atmosphere into their songs while keeping the basic rock elements of guitar, bass and drums at their core.
It's almost too difficult to pick favorites here, but for those seeking to get into Anathema, some great choices are "Inner Silence," "Pressure," "Pulled Under At 2000 Meters Per Second," "A Natural Disaster," and "Eternity (Part 3)."
