The prototypical gothic rock band, the boys from Northampton first took the post-punk world by storm in 1979 with their classic, "Bela Lugosi's Dead." Their minimalist, dub-influenced rock quickly became a hit, and they soon found themselves surrounded on one side by the British pop charts and on the other by the underground Batcave set searching for a new icon to rally the emerging goth scene around.

These pressures, combined with lead singer Peter Murphy falling ill with pneumonia, spelled the end for the band. They broke up in 1983, before the release of their final album, Burning From The Inside. Aside from the occasional reunion tour--which did spawn the live Gotham album--Bauhaus laid dormant for over twenty years, until they announced a restoration of the original lineup in 2005. Most recently, they played support for Nine Inch Nails on tour in 2006, have released a few new songs and plan to record a new album.

After recovering from pneumonia, Murphy launched a successful solo career, and after a number of smaller side projects, the other three members regrouped to form Love And Rockets, who released seven albums in the 80's and 90's and spawned several hits of their own.
