Genre: Industrial Dance
Origin: Germany
Status: Active
Wumpscut is the brainchild of former DJ Rudy Ratzinger, who made the transition to production in the early 90's after being inspired by groups like Leæther Strip. Noted for its harsh and distorted electronic loops, tortured vocals, heavy use of sampling and vocoders, and meandering background atmospherics, Wumpscut skillfully weaves together aggressive tunes with danceable undercurrents and a subtle touch of evil.
Ratzinger also has a penchant for repackaging, offering a wide range of special editions, box sets, and remix albums. Whether this is a natural extension of his roots as a DJ or simply a flair for marketing aimed at collectors, it amounts to a truly prodigious output of material. Only a selection of major releases are listed at Darktronica; a more complete discography is available on Wumpscut's official website (albeit currently only on the German portion). Bear in mind that many recent releases here also have limited edition bonus discs full of remixes and additional material not tracklisted here.
All in all, Wumpscut is highly recommended for industrial dance fans looking for the darkest corners of the scene. Darktronica favorites are "Wreath of Barbs," "Crown of Thorns," "Auf Der Jagd," "War," and "Churist Churist." For new listeners looking to break into the deep discography, the Evoke and Bone Peeler albums are probably the most accessible, with the Embryodead album really capturing the best essence of Wumpscut's roots.
