The main vehicle of industrial juggernaut Sascha Konietzko, KMFDM has been the launching point or inspiration for countless other artists in the darktronica scene. Membership has been a revolving door ever since the band's beginnings in 1984, and KMFDM's home base has changed nearly as many times (from Paris to Hamburg to Chicago to Seattle), but it seems that anyone involved in the band has gone on to have a noteworthy career. Many former members still collaborate with current personnel, with KMFDM maintaining particularly strong ties with Raymond Watts of Pig.
By the late 1980's, KMFDM and Ministry had defined the industrial rock sound and penchant for political lyrics and imagery that so many other industrial bands would imitate in the 1990's. KMFDM is also known for juxtaposing light-hearted or sing-songy female vocals against their thrashing guitar riffs and thumping electronics, giving their songs an infectious danceability.
The name KMFDM has been the subject of much discussion. While originally an acronym for a German phrase that loosely translates as "no mercy for the masses," the name caused so much confusion that Wax Trax! Records sponsored a contest encouraging fans to come up with 1,001 alternate meanings for the letters.
